The golden visa for business owners in the UAE gives company owners, partners, and entrepreneurs long-term residency without an employer or a sponsor. If you already run a UAE company, or plan to set one up, you may qualify through your business rather than through property.
Exactitude Business Services handles UAE golden visa applications as part of our PRO services in Dubai and the UAE. In this guide, we focus only on the routes that suit business owners: the company investor route, the entrepreneur route, and the options owners often combine with them. We explain what each route asks for, which company records matter, and what keeps the visa valid after approval.
This guide is written by our PRO and business formation team, drawing on 14+ years in the UAE and 30+ years of combined team experience. The rules come from official sources: the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) Golden Residency Guide (updated 10 September 2026), the UAE Government portal u.ae, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) and the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. Where a point is our own practice, we say so.

What the Golden Visa Gives a Business Owner
A standard investor or partner visa is tied to your company and needs regular renewal. The Golden Visa is different. According to the ICP and u.ae, it offers:
- Long-term, renewable residency. AE describes a residence visa valid for 5 or 10 years. ICP’s 2026 guide lists 10 years for investors and entrepreneurs.
- No sponsor needed. Your residency does not depend on an employer.
- Time abroad without losing residency. You can stay outside the UAE for more than the usual six months. GDRFA states golden residence holders are exempt from the 180-day rule.
- Family sponsorship. ICP says holders can get residence permits for spouses and children, regardless of age, and for parents. They can also sponsor domestic workers under the applicable rules.
- A six-month entry visa for applicants abroad. ICP grants eligible applicants outside the UAE a six-month multiple-entry visa, renewable once for another six months, to complete the process.
- Family security. If the golden visa holder dies, ICP says sponsored family members may remain in the UAE until their permits expire.
For a business owner, the biggest practical gain is stability. Your residency is no longer tied to one license renewal cycle, and your family’s residency is secured for the long term.
Which Golden Visa Routes Fit Business Owners?
ICP lists several golden residency categories. Four are relevant to people who own or run a business:
- Investors in public investments. This includes owning or co-owning a UAE company with a share worth at least AED 2 million, or holding a deposit of at least AED 2 million.
- This applies to SME owners with qualifying revenue, founders with an approved business idea, or founders who have already sold a venture.
- Real estate investors. This applies to owners of UAE property worth at least AED 2.2 million.
- Skilled professionals at senior levels. This includes chief executives employed under a UAE work permit who meet the salary and education rules.
Most of our business-owner clients qualify through Route 1 or Route 2. We cover those in detail below.
Route 1: Golden Visa for Investors Through a UAE Company
This is the route most company owners ask about. ICP’s guide lists three company-related ways to meet the public investment threshold of AED 2 million.
Setting up a new company with AED 2 million in capital
ICP says an investor may establish an establishment or company in the UAE with a capital of at least AED 2,000,000. This suits founders who are setting up a substantial business and can fund the capital themselves.
Plan the structure with the visa in mind. The capital, the shareholding, and the company’s financial records all need to support the AED 2 million figure later, when the application is reviewed.
Owning a share of an existing company
ICP also accepts a partner in an existing or newly established company whose financial share is at least AED 2,000,000.
GDRFA’s Dubai service adds an important detail. It measures the investor’s share by “the value of their share of the company’s assets”. It asks for a certified financial report from an accredited audit firm in the UAE to prove that value.
In practice, this means a share capital figure on paper is not the whole story. Your share must be supported by the company’s audited financial position.
Your capital must be your own
ICP is clear on two conditions for the public investment route:
- The invested capital must be fully owned by the investor and must not come from a loan.
- The investor must provide documents and evidence showing the source and ownership of the capital.
The investor and family members must also hold comprehensive, valid health insurance when applying.
Expert tip: start collecting source-of-funds evidence before you inject the capital. Bank transfers from your personal account, sale agreements for assets you sold, and dividend records are far easier to gather at the time than years later.
Route 2: The UAE Golden Visa for Entrepreneurs
The entrepreneur category is designed for founders rather than passive investors. ICP and the Ministry of Economy and Tourism list three qualifying routes, plus health insurance for the entrepreneur and family.
An SME with at least AED 1 million in annual revenue
The applicant owns, or is a partner in, an entrepreneurial venture registered in the UAE. It must be classified as a small or medium-sized enterprise, work in an approved field, and earn annual revenues of at least AED 1,000,000.
This route rewards a business that is already trading. Your revenue figures need to be clear and supported by proper accounts.
An approved business idea
The applicant gains approval for the entrepreneurial idea from an accredited business incubator, the Ministry of Economy, ICP, or a relevant local authority. The approval allows the proposed activity to be established and run in the UAE.
A founder who has already sold a venture
The applicant is the founder, or one of the founders, of one or more ventures that were previously sold for a total value of at least AED 7,000,000. The Ministry of Economy and Tourism notes this is subject to approval by the Ministry or the relevant authorities.
Entrepreneurs in Dubai: nomination first
In Dubai, GDRFA’s entrepreneur service says the category is nominated by the Dubai Future Foundation. The application asks for a passport copy and the nomination letter.
GDRFA adds that a nomination is not final approval. The final decision follows GDRFA’s own review of the file against the approved criteria.
Other Routes Business Owners Often Consider
Some owners do not meet the company or entrepreneur thresholds yet, or prefer to keep business and residency separate. Two other official routes are often discussed.
A bank deposit
ICP lists a deposit of at least AED 2,000,000 with an investment fund or a national bank in the UAE. GDRFA’s Dubai service requires a bank certificate showing the deposit is frozen for at least two years. It also states the deposit may not be withdrawn during the golden residency period.
Property
ICP accepts one or more UAE properties with a total value of at least AED 2,200,000. A property may be financed through a loan from an approved local bank. Off-plan units bought from an approved local real estate company also count. In Dubai, GDRFA requires a lien on the property for the residency period.
If you are holding property through a company, read our guide on whether a Dubai offshore company can own freehold property first. The property route is generally applied for in the investor’s own name.
Senior executives
ICP’s skilled professional category covers chairpersons and chief executives at occupational level one, and specialists at level two, under the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation classification. It requires a valid work permit under an approved employment contract, at least a bachelor’s degree, and a monthly salary of at least AED 30,000. This route suits salaried executives more than shareholders.

How Long Is the Golden Visa for Business Owners?
Official sources differ slightly here, so we prefer to be precise.
- ICP’s Golden Residency Guide, updated in September 2026, lists 10 years for investors in public investments, real estate investors, and entrepreneurs.
- GDRFA’s Dubai services also state 10 years for investors and entrepreneurs.
- UAE’s summary table still shows 5 years for real estate investors and for entrepreneurs.
The validity printed on your permit is set by the issuing authority. We confirm the current position for your category before you apply.
Step by Step: Applying for a Golden Visa as a Business Owner
The exact path depends on your route and your emirate. For the company investor route, the process usually looks like this.
1. Eligibility review
Match your situation to one route. Check the company’s capital, your shareholding, and the latest financial statements against the AED 2 million threshold.
2. Prepare the company’s financial evidence
Arrange a certified financial report from an accredited UAE audit firm. Also prepare the company’s bank statement and tax records. Our accounting and bookkeeping team keeps these ready year-round.
3. Gather personal documents
You’ll need your passport copy, photos, source-of-funds evidence, and health insurance for you and your family. Any documents issued abroad may need attestation and legal translation.
4. Get a nomination, where required
Entrepreneurs need approval or a nomination from the relevant body, for example, the Dubai Future Foundation in Dubai.
5. Submit the application
Apply through ICP’s digital channels or, in Dubai, through GDRFA’s website or an Amer service centre.
6. Medical test and Emirates ID
As with other residence permits, you complete the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics.
7. Family visas
Once your golden residence is issued, sponsor your spouse, children and, where eligible, your parents.
GDRFA lists an expected completion time of five days for its investor and entrepreneur services once a complete file is submitted. The full journey takes longer, because audit reports, nominations and attestation all take time. We give you a realistic timeline after reviewing your file.
Documents Checklist for the Company Investor Route
GDRFA’s Dubai service lists these documents for an investor or partner:
- Copy of passport.
- A certified financial report proving the approved value, from an accredited UAE audit firm.
- A valid trade license with the partners’ appendix.
- A bank statement for the company.
- Tax registration with tax receipts for the last year.
- For free zone companies, a certificate from the free zone confirming the company’s capital and the investor’s share, with the certified financial report.
- Documents required by the audit office, such as the company license and the auditor’s license issued by the Ministry of Economy.
GDRFA also says the size of the company’s investment or employment, its administrative efficiency, and its financial solvency are evaluated before final approval. A well-kept company file helps your case.
If your company documents or personal certificates were issued outside the UAE, our attestation and legal translation services prepare them in the required form.
Mainland or Free Zone: Does the Company Type Matter?
Both mainland and free zone companies can support a golden visa for business owners in the UAE. The rules focus on the value of your investment, not on where the company is licensed.
The difference is in the paperwork. GDRFA asks free zone companies for a certificate from the free zone confirming the capital and the investor’s share. Mainland companies rely on their trade license, partners’ appendix and audited figures.
If you are still choosing a structure, compare mainland company formation in Dubai with free zone business setup. As a starting point, Exactitude packages for a Dubai mainland company begin from AED 11,000 without visa, and Dubai free zone packages begin from AED 12,500 (IFZA from AED 12,999).
These are company setup prices only. They are separate from the AED 2 million investment that the golden visa route requires.
Keeping Your Golden Visa After Approval
Approval is not the end of your obligations. Official sources set out several continuing conditions:
- Support yourself and your family.GDRFA says one condition for keeping a golden residence permit is the ability to support yourself and your family without government support.
- The authority can check.GDRFA reserves the right to make sure holders continue to meet the conditions throughout the permit’s validity.
- Keep the investment in place.GDRFA states property may not be disposed of, and the deposit may not be refunded, during the residency period.
- Keep health insurance valid.ICP’s real estate and professional categories require cover throughout the residency.
For company investors, the lesson is simple. Keep the company compliant and its books in order. That means a valid license, current Corporate Tax and VAT filings and up-to-date financial statements. Our Corporate Tax and VAT services help owners stay on top of these filings.
Common Mistakes Business Owners Make
These are the issues we most often see:
- Assuming the share capital in the Memorandum of Association alone proves AED 2 million, without audited figures to back it up.
- Funding the capital with a loan, when ICP requires capital that is not derived from a loan.
- Leaving source-of-funds evidence until the application stage.
- Applying under the entrepreneur route before revenue is properly recorded.
- Letting family health insurance lapse.
- Treating golden residence as permanent and letting the company fall behind on filings.
- Relying on outdated online figures. Some websites still quote thresholds that no longer appear on official pages.
A Client’s Experience Applying for a Golden Visa Through His Company
“I had run my trading company in Dubai for four years on a standard partner visa. Every renewal felt like a small project, and my wife kept asking about something more permanent for the family.
I assumed the golden visa meant buying property. Exactitude asked a different question first: what is your share of the company actually worth on paper? They reviewed our latest accounts and confirmed my share was above AED 2 million. The figures needed to come from an audited report, though, not just the capital in our MoA.
Our books were fine, but the audit had not been signed yet. They coordinated with our auditors and gathered the company bank statement and tax records. They also prepared a short file showing where my original capital came from.
The step I would have missed was health insurance for my parents, whom I wanted to sponsor. They flagged it early, so nothing stalled.
The application itself was smoother than I expected, because every document had been prepared before we submitted. Now, the company and my residency no longer feel like one fragile thing. I know exactly what I need to keep in order, and we now review the accounts every quarter.”

FAQ: Golden Visa for Business Owners in the UAE
Can I get a UAE golden visa through my company?
Yes, if your investment meets the threshold. ICP accepts a company established with at least AED 2 million in capital. It also accepts a partner whose financial share in a UAE company is at least AED 2 million.
Is share capital in the MoA enough to prove AED 2 million?
Not on its own. GDRFA in Dubai asks for a certified financial report from an accredited UAE audit firm proving the value of the investor’s share of the company’s assets.
Can I use a loan to fund the AED 2 million?
No. ICP states the invested capital must be fully owned by the investor and must not come from a loan. You must provide evidence of its source and ownership.
What are the golden visa requirements for entrepreneurs?
ICP and the Ministry of Economy and Tourism list an SME with annual revenues of at least AED 1 million in an approved field. They also accept an idea approved by an accredited incubator or authority, or a founder of ventures sold for at least AED 7 million. Health insurance is required too.
Do free zone company owners qualify?
Yes. The rules look at the value of the investment, not the license type. In Dubai, GDRFA asks free zone companies for a certificate from the free zone confirming the capital and the investor’s share.
Can I sponsor my family on a golden visa?
Yes. ICP says holders can get residence permits for their spouse and children, regardless of age, and for their parents.
Does Exactitude handle golden visa applications?
Yes. Our PRO team reviews eligibility, prepares the company and personal documents, and follows the application through with the authority. Each application is decided by the government authority.
